The JBCF Awards $15,000 in High-tech Summer Camp Scholarships to Mid-Michigan Students

The Johnny Burke Children’s Foundation, through a corporate contribution from the AT&T Foundation, is awarding full and partial scholarships to Mid-Michigan students wishing to attend Science, Technology, Engineering & Math, (STEM) camps offered by Delta College, SVSU, and Kettering University in Flint, during the summer of 2012.The JBCF’s focus on scholarships in the STEM fields are in response to the nation-wide initiative to improve the math and science scores of American youth in comparison to their international counter parts. It is also imperative to expose the value that careers in high-tech industries have on our youth. According to the National Math and Science Initiative, those with degrees pertaining to the STEM fields can expect to make significantly higher salaries than those who do not.The purpose of these scholarships is to expose the STEM fields to all area students, especially female, and urban youth who otherwise may not learn about the plentiful opportunities that degrees in the STEM fields can produce for them. In turn, our community will be able to attract more of these industries and jobs, with the pool of talent we will develop through the STEM programs. The JBCF has already awarded 85+ students with scholarships to these summer camps, and are still fulfilling last-minute scholarship requests.
