Mr. Moore has been the School Counselor at GBA for 4 years. He has made a tremendous impact with students and staff. He is a strong advocate of education and we are honored to have him as a key team leader at GBA!
This is my 5th year at Grand Blanc Academy. I love my job. It can be very stressful, there’s always some emergency, always a deadline always demands both preplanned and completely unexpected. But I love it because at the end of the day I’m making a difference in the lives of kids and in the lives of those that help kids.
I’ve always liked helping people and solving problems and now I like to help others learn to solve problems. Being a counselor fits me so well. It’s what I’ve always done.
I’m a musician, I’ve played Latin and African percussion instruments on my church’s worship team for about 13 years now. I’m also a singer. I also like being outdoors, skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. I also love playing strategy board games.
The board game club activities of last year and this have really sprung up from my own enjoyment of the hobby. Also, there’s been research in recent years linking board games to academic development. Students who play strategy board games learn to be better problem solvers and perform better at math. Not to mention, learning to get along with others even in the context of a conflict. I also enjoy board games with my family and friends and in recent years have gotten in touch with a few game designers, game researchers and other educators. In collaborating with these people I hope to be able to use the combined knowledge and experience to encourage the academic and personal / social growth of students at GBA.
Bullying and learning to interact respectfully with others is a topic of extreme importance to me. I lived overseas when for a period of my childhood and when I moved back to the US in middle school I was teased relentlessly. Being socially awkward and bullied for my differences had an impact on my grades and my feelings about me as a person. It has always been a huge goal of mine to teach students how to be kind with one another, how to deal with bullying when you see or experience it and to help parents and fellow educators promote a peaceful and cooperative spirit in their classrooms and homes. This is a major focus of my work at GBA.
My family and my faith are the two most important things in life. I have been married nearly 12 years now to a wonderful woman and have 5 kids. We spend every summer in Canada, hiking, swimming, canoeing and crafting. My kids like to paint on rocks. I like to build rustic furniture. Without my down time with my family I wouldn’t have the energy to do what I do as a school counselor. They make everything worthwhile.
