As we approach the winter season, Superior Furs and Leather would like to give you these tips on how to take care of your fur coat to keep its life, luster, and luxuriousness.
Fall & Winter: NEVER KEEP YOUR FUR COAT IN PLASTIC.
Taking care of your fur in the winter time is fairly easy, but a lot of fur owner make the mistake of putting their furs in plastic bags. Plastic suffocates the fur and dries it out. When you’re not wearing your fur coat, hang it in your closet without crushing it. Keep it out of the cloth bag to prevent the crushing of the hairs. If your coat gets wet, shake it off and hang it up in an open space and let it air dry. If your fur happens to get saturated in water or precipitation to the point where the lining is wet, take it to your local furrier immediately.
Spring/Summer: AIR CONDITIONING DOESN’T CONDITION YOUR COAT:
When it’s too warm to wear your coat, bring it to your local furrier for storage. The coat needs to be in a cool place, and by cool, we don’t mean air-conditioned. Air conditioning is not sufficient to store a fur coat in because the humidity cannot be controlled. Your coat should be kept at 55 degrees with 50% humidity. This ideal climate is best achieved in the vault at your local furrier.
CLEANING SHOULD BE DONE EVERY OTHER YEAR. Regardless of whether your fur coat has been worn, cleaning should occur every other year. Cleaning does not just remove dirt, but puts the oil back into the coat, preventing the coat from drying out. Also, by taking it to a furrier, you coat can be examined for small repairs, which could prevent praying for bigger repair jobs in the future.
