National Action Network to protest at Hurley Monday
FLINT -- A second nurse at Hurley Medical Center is suing the hospital over alleged racial discrimination.
According to court records, Carlotta Armstong, a nurse in Hurley's neonatal intensive care unit, says on or about Oct. 31, 2012, a Caucasian father told the staff he didn't want any African-American nurses caring for his baby and then showed a tattoo of a swastika.
The suit also claims there was a meeting on Nov. 1, 2012 with Hurley management. At the meeting, the suit says management informed the nurses they would honor the father’s request. A note was then allegedly posted on the assignment clipboard, reading: "Please, no African-American nurses to care for baby per dad's request. Thank you."
Court records indicate there was also a second staff meeting between the meeting with Hurley management and the note being posted. In the staff meeting, records show the nurse manager told the nurses present in the meeting not to let African-American employees care for the baby.
Armstrong is the second Hurley nurse to file such a claim. Tonya Battle filed a similar suit last week against the hospital.
The president of the Michigan chapter of the National Action Network, Charles Williams II, tells NBC25 the activist group will be in Flint Monday at 11a.m. to protest.
