BURTON (AP) -- McLaren Cancer Institute is offering free colorectal cancer screening kits throughout the month of March.

The Burton-based cancer institute is doing so in accordance with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

The kits are recommended for those with a family history of colorectal cancer, as well as anyone who's 50 and older.

The test is painless and can be self-administered with a minimal stool sample. It takes only a few minutes and can be performed in the privacy of a home. No fasting is required, and any medicine can be taken normally as prescribed.

More than 5,400 people took advantage of McLaren's free colorectal cancer screening program last year.
