LANSING -- A Michigan legislator, who heads the House Education committee, is calling on the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to rescind its complaint about American Indian mascots in schools.

Republican representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons, of Alto, released a statement on Monday criticizing the decision by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to bring this complaint to the federal level.

Last week the department filed the complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights.

It was asked that any school that uses American Indian mascots or imagery in K-12 schools be denied funding unless they make a change.

Rep. Lyons believes the issue should be resolved at the local level and that the department is "putting students' education funding at risk for political gain."
