A Genesee County woman who died last month from fungal meningitis has been identified.

The family of 56-year-old Karina Baxter of Burton told NBC25 that Baxter died September 23rd after getting a pain injection containing contaminated steroids.

The family has hired a lawyer and is now seeking legal action.

Baxter was a retired math teacher and worked as a tutor and substitute teacher.

She's one of 23 people nationwide who have died from fungal meningitis, which has been linked to contaminated steroids shipped from a Massachusetts pharmacy.

Baxter's family relased the following information:

Karina Baxter, age 56, of Burton, formerly of Grand Blanc, died after receiving a pain injection containing contaminated steroids. Karin died September 23, after suffering a stroke the previous morning. She received a pain injection from Michigan Pain Specialists in Brighton in mid-August. Karin had been receiving these shots regularly for over 8 years, driving to Brighton for the injections instead of getting them locally because of her happiness with her doctor at MPS. Karin had three adult children, Anita (age 30), Andrew (age 28) and Brian (age 22). She was a retired math teacher who enjoyed tutoring many local students and substitute teaching at local schools whenever possible. She loved teaching so much that she requested that upon her death her body be anatomically donated to the University of Michigan so that others might continue to learn from her once she was gone. Karin was strong, kind, and friendly, making friends throughout the community with people she sometimes only interacted with for minutes a day. She had a uniquely giving nature and received great pleasure from helping others. Her family asks that you please respect their privacy during this time of loss.
