Woman was 56
GENESEE COUNTY -- A Genesee County woman has died from fungal meningitis.
The 56-year-old woman was one of the patients who received tainted steroid injections that have been recalled by a Massachusetts pharmacy because of contamination.
Four clinics in Michigan received the steroids, including Michigan Neurosurgical Institute in Grand Blanc Township.
A statement on the institute's Web site reads: "To date, no patients of Michigan Neurosurgical Institute have been affected by meningitis as a result of the steroid."
A 67-year-old woman in Livingston County has also died, along with a 78-year-old woman from Washtenaw County.
Aside from age, gender, and location of residence, the Michigan Department of Community Health cannot release any additional information regarding the three deaths in Michigan because of Health Information Protection laws.
The death total in Michigan now stands at three since the outbreak.
In total, 11 people have died across 10 states from the rare non-contagious fungal meningitis. There are 25 confirmed meningitis cases in Michigan and 119 nationwide.
The health department expects those numbers will only go up.
