FLINT -- Flint's chief planning officer Megan Hunter met with the public Tuesday night in hopes of getting residents to sign up for a number of volunteer advisory groups.

"The city from 1960 has lost almost half of its population and I think the challenge is thinking of creative ways of stabilizing neighborhoods and property values and repurposing vacant property and vacant buildings," Hunter said.

She is a native of Metro Detroit and worked in the city planning department in Los Angeles before accepting the job in March.

Hunter says the city has not had a written master plan since 1960.

She is also in charge of rewriting Flint's zoning code and creating  a capital improvement plan.

Volunteers are needed to serve on advisory groups that focus on several areas, including housing, transportation and public safety.
