FLINT -- More than 70 women and men were screened for breast cancer Wednesday.

Roughly one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.  By the end of 2012, there will be nearly 230,000 new cases of invasive-breast cancer.  But research shows early detection is one of the best weapons against the disease.

NBC25 and Flint’s McLaren Cancer Institute offered a free breast cancer screening Wednesday.  Nine doctors performed the screenings.  Patients doctors determined needed a follow-up were set up to get mammograms on a later date.

Women who are out of work or uninsured said the free breast cancer screening was especially beneficial for them.

“It's kind of hard with no insurance, you can't afford it, so this is really, this is a blessing for me to come here at least relieve my peace of mind,” Terry Hatfield said.

Dr. Linda Lawrence of the McLaren Imaging Center said, “Especially during Breast Cancer Awareness month, I think it's important that we try and meet the needs of some of these people that have not been able to get this done.”
