SAGINAW -- More than $7,000 was raised as a part of 26 Acts of Kindness by the Saginaw Community Foundation.

Ann Curry of NBC News had suggested that to honor the 20 children and 6 adults killed in Newtown, Conecticut that people do 26 acts of kindness.

Mark Flegenheimer, who used to chair the foundation and is currently the president of Michigan Sugar Company, sent a challenge to the foundation's board members.

Flegenheimer asked each member to donate $100, and that he would match each donation given.

“Just like so many others, I was heartbroken by the events in Newton,” Flegenheimer said. “My children told me about Ann Currie's 26 Acts tweet and I thought it was a wonderful idea.”

Others came on board with donations as well, with Todd Gregory, regional president of Citizens Bank and current board member, offer a match of his own of $1,500.

In total, the Saginaw Community Foundation raised $7,121.78 for area organizations that help children.

The funds will be divided between different organizations, including Operation Reach, Mid-Michigan Children's Museum, YMCA of Saginaw, First Ward Community Center, and the String Instrument Program.

“Our board is committed to the Saginaw Community Foundation’s mission, which is to improve the quality of life in Saginaw County,” said Reneé Johnston, president and CEO of the foundation. “This seemingly small act of kindness will have a very large impact on the children in our own community.”
