FLINT -- Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

But here in Mid-Michigan, there's at least one exception to that scene depicted in clement Clarke Moore's classic poem.

It all stems from how some of Santa's helpers are hard at work at the Catholic Charities Soup Kitchen in Flint.

"We work, you know, not only up to Christmas but Christmas Day and beyond. 7 days a week," said Jon Manse of Catholic Charities.  "365 days a year. We never close."

Much like Santa's North Pole workshop, the North Flint Catholic Charities Soup Kitchen is constantly bustling with intesne and noisy activity.  Assuming the role of Santa's elves in this scenario are community volunteers.

"Volunteers are essential. It's one of those things that if we didn't have it, we wouldn't exist," Manse said.

Serving meals to the area needy, twice a day, 52 weeks a year, is no easy task.

It takes about 50-70 volunteers each day at all of the Catholic Charities Soup Kitchen sites.
