One of the largest global energy companies in the world, BP provides its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, and petrochemicals for everyday items. The London-based company is active in energy exploration and production in 30 countries with sales operations in more than 80 countries.
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon, a BP-leased offshore drilling rig situated 40 miles south east of the Louisiana coast, exploded, killing 11 workers. The oil rig sank two days later as it began leaking oil.
At a congressional hearing on May 11, BP officials accepted immediate responsibility for the oil spill but blamed the accident on Transocean Ltd., a Switzerland-based offshore-drilling contractor, which owned the drilling rig and built the rig's key safety devices, and Halliburton Inc., which worked on sealing the well.
BP has agreed to cover cleanup costs and damages to businesses directly affected by the spill.
