The power of the sun can save money on your electric bill, thanks to some solar shingles made in Midland. Dow Chemical has just started selling its Powerhouse Solar shingles in Michigan. They can be installed through Freeland-based Cobblestone Homes for new home construction.
"Great Lakes Bay Region residents have the opportunity to be among the first in the nation to own homes powered by solar energy via the groundbreaking Powerhouse Solar Shingles," said Cobblestone co-owner Mark Wahl. "Just as important, we have the chance to support a Michigan-made product that creates jobs in our region and helps preserve the Earth's natural resources."Powerhouse Solar Shingles are part of a residential solar roofing system that functions and protects like a standard shingle but also has embedded solar cells to power the home. The shingles are built in Midland and are expected to create 1,275 jobs by 2015.
Homes with Powerhouse Solar Shingles qualify for a federal tax credit and other incentives.
In March, Cobblestone was featured on HGTV's "Showhouse Showdown," filmed in Midland County's Larkin Township. The homebuilder was chosen for the show after a nationwide search.
