FLINT -- For as long as anyone can remember, city workers have collected garbage in Flint. Starting Monday that will change.

According to a news release, the city will subcontract with Republic Waste Services starting March 4th. The city is warning residents there could be an interuption in service during the transition to the new trash collector. The city estimates it will gain a million dollars in the deal. It will sell all of its garbage trucks but 3 to Republic. Eligible workers were offered jobs with the company.

Recycling is expected to start 90 days from March 4th. Residents will only be allowed to put out 1 large item a week, instead of the current 3. They want the trash at the curb by 7:00 AM. Regular pick up days will stay the same.

Emergency Financial Manager Ed Kurtz will provide more details during a briefing tomorrow at 1:30.
