If you're a General Motors employee thinking about purchasing a new car, things are about to change.
The car company plans to restructure their employee discounts on Jan. 5.
"The program we have now called GMS will be replaced on (Jan. 5) with the Preferred Pricing and (Employee Vehicle Allowance) plans," said Jim Simms of Simms Chevrolet in Clio.
Currently, employees have a flat discount rate. But starting Jan. 5 each discount will depend on the market and the vehicle.
If buyers wait until Jan. 5, popular cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and the Equinox will cost more.
"The thing that's different now is the hot selling cars, the Equinox and the Camaro, those types of things won't have an Employee Vehicle Allowance," said Pete Wills with Applegate Chevrolet.
Car dealers say since the new plan won't be a set discount, people looking to buy a new car should stay alert.
"Watch their local news or contact a local dealership because it will change," Simms said. "It will be similar to a rebate program."
While car dealerships aren't sure how the new discounts will affect their bottom line, the one thing that's certain is that it's out with the old and in with the new.
"It's certainly helping right now," Willis said. "I mean, there are a lot of people that are concerned about it and want to take advantage of what's going right now. I'm sure at the beginning, we're going to see everyone trying to digest the new info. But in the long run, everything will get back to normal."
General Motors spokesman John McDonald refused to comment about the change in the employee discount.
