FLINT -- UofM Flint nursing students are taking skills learned in the classroom to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.  The group of seniors will join UofM Flint alumni and other organizations in the Dominican Republic assisting victims from neighboring Haiti at medical facilities there.

“We’re teaching them things such as oral hygiene, hypertension issues, and also about their nutrition and the food that they eat down there,” said Genny Carley, one of the program’s participants.

The trip is part of International Service Learning courses.  Students from UofM Flint have been traveling to the Dominican Republic for fifteen years but quickly moved into action in the weeks following the January 12th quake.

They accepted donations to help fund the trip and developed 900 pounds of goods to take to the victims, including band-aids and toothpaste.

The students will be gone for 8 days, rotate shifts in the different medical units, and document their experience in journals.  Organizers and program participants thank the Genesee County area for helping with donations.
