FLINT -- Flint Public Safety Chief Alvern Lock said Friday he wanted to set the record straight, after rumors that only 4-5 police officers were working per shift. This came following the 46 officers that were recently laid off (as of late, union officials report at least 10 may be reinstated).
“The 4 or 5 that have been rumored is totally untrue,” he said in a press conference. “On (Friday’s) schedule we have over two dozen officers assigned. That does not include plain clothed officers. That does not include supervisors who may be out also,” he added.
Flint Police Officers Association President Keith Speer said at least 4 officers were working Thursday night when three had to respond to a critical stabbing call, and alleging two others had to be called in from home, going on overtime.
Lock denied the claim. On the fire department side, Lock said three fully functioning stations will cover the city, but admitted some calls will take longer when down two stations and two-dozen firefighters.
Lock said arbitration sessions will continue as both sides try to work out their differences.
