Federal, state, county, and local leaders held an emergency closed door meeting in Flint Wednesday to discuss public safety.
City council members called for the meeting after Flint Mayor Dayne Walling put 46 police officers and about 2 dozen firefighters on lay-off last week.
The mayor says he made the cuts because he has to balance the budget according to state law. He says public safety unions did not agree to needed concessions to save jobs. Union leaders have disputed this.
Sources at the closed door meeting tell NBC25 law enforcement leaders around Genesee County have concerns about public safety in Flint and the impact cuts will have on the entire region.
City Council President Delrico Loyd says he used the meeting to brainstorm ways to increase revenue and avoid a millage.
He says federal leaders say Flint is in the running for a grant that could help bring back several public safety workers.
