Texting while driving will be illegal in Michigan July 1st, but some say it's not enough.
One lawmaker says banning texting while biking needs to be considered.
State Representative Lee Gonzales from Flint introduced the texting ban in Michigan.
Now, he's thinking it could be expanded from four wheels to two.
Gonzales tells NBC25, "Bicyclists are responsible for following the same rules on the road as motorists and so any form of distracted driving or riding is dangerous."
The majority of cyclists NBC25 spoke to say they would support the ban.
Elida Martinex from Bay City says, "I actually do it with my bike. I'm so used to my bike so I do pay attention a lot, but honestly, I don't think it's (texting while biking) a good idea because some of the drivers don't want to pay attention to the people on bikes."
The talk about banning texting while cycling is just that...talk.
There's no bill or proposal.
Gonzales says, "I think we need the experience with ban on texting while driving before we look at any further expansion."
Gonzales says statistics prove seatbelt laws and drinking while driving laws keep people safer and that if the texting ban works, it could be expanded to other means of transportation.
Several other states are talking about banning texting while riding a bike.
They include California, Virginia, and Rhode Island.
Opponents say, the focus should be on stopping distracted driving, not necessarily banning certain activities.
They also say, the government is putting too many restrictions on citizens.
