More than 150 thousand electric customers lost power across the state after Tuesday’s powerful winds.

Wednesday DTE crews worked to restore power across the street from Townsend North Elementary school in Vassar as students sat in darker than normal classrooms without electricity.

The school’s principal called the outage an inconvenience for adults, but a fun learning experience for students.

“They did think it was an adventure,” said Principal Cheryl Weirauch.

She says students pretended they were learning in a time before electricity.  It worked out just fine because the building has a lot of windows, and flashlights were available if you needed to go somewhere where it was dark.

The principal says she decided to not cancel classes due to the outage, because there are only a limited number of act-of-God-days off allowed by the state and the outage posed no safety risk.

Crews out working say all outages in the area were caused by winds knocking out trees and power lines.

DTE Energy and Consumers Energy say they expect power will be restored to most by the end of the day.
