A North Saginaw Charter Academy sixth grade student was diagnosed with MRSA last week. It's a disease that starts out with small red bumps, but could be deadly.

NBC25 spoke with a local health expert about how easy this disease spreads.

Mark Valacak of the Genesee County Health Department says, "The actual bacteria that carries this, if we were to swab the population, about 25% of the population would have this on their skin or in their nose."

Health officials say you're best defense is to keep your hands washed. Also, cover any open sore until it heals. Don't share common items like razors or towels because they can transfer the bacteria.
