Police say they do not believe the mother of the baby killed by a pit bull in Kalamazoo committed negligence.

In Saginaw this incident is reigniting debate about a dangerous dogs ordinance. The grandfather of a 3-year-old boy attacked plans to speak to city council about the need to restrict so-called dangerous dogs.

Update - Monday, February 21, 2011

WOOD-TV reports the pit bull that mauled and killed a 10-day-old baby has been euthanized.

Police say they do not believe the mother of the baby killed by a pit bull committed negligence.

This news comes as police release additional details about how the attack happened.   Investigators tell WOOD-TV the child's mother put the infant in a bassinette for a nap and left the room.  Police say the dog then went in the room and attacked.

KALAMAZOO, Michigan- WZZM reports police are investigating how a pet pit bull killed a newborn baby.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a Kalamazoo family’s home. Police said the child’s mother and a 2-year-old sibling were home at the time.

Rescue crews rushed to the home to help after getting a 911 call, but the ten day old boy died at the scene from “extensive mauling injuries”.

Neighbors tell the Kalamazoo Gazette the dog tried to bite authorities as they brought it out of the house. The dog is now being held in quarantine.

Locally, this comes as leaders in Saginaw continue to discuss ordinances on breeds of dogs deemed dangerous.  Let us know if you think this is an example of why these dogs should be regulated by leaving your comments below.
