The issue of human trafficking has gotten a lot more awareness recently.
A local YWCA hosted an event Monday to educate women on the subject.
Miss Michigan's Katie LaRoche spoke to a group of women about human trafficking at Bay Valley Resort and Conference Center.
She says there aren't solid statistics for the State of Michigan right now, but that it's becoming a major problem internationally.
"It's happening all over the world, but it's also happening right here in Michigan. They say that 14,500 to 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked into the states every single year," says LaRoche.
LaRoche says there have been labor and sex trafficking rings broken up in the Detroit area.
