CEO Dan Akerson has announced the company will create about 4,000 jobs, and will invest about $2 billion in U.S. plants.  Among those investments will be the creation of a new eight speed transmission.  This will be manufactured at the Toledo, Ohio plant.

General Motors is announcing thousands of new jobs.

A press conference with GM CEO Dan Akerson is scheduled to take place at GM’s Toledo transmission plant Tuesday afternoon.

The Detroit Free Press reports that 4,200 jobs will be added in eight states, including Michigan.  The media outlet says about 2,000 of those jobs could be in Detroit, with most of them ending up at the Chevrolet Volt factory.

In total, 17 plants will receive a portion of the $2 billion update.

Any new jobs will first be offered to laid-off employees.
