They served our country, but many call the streets home.

Statistics show 20% of the homeless population are veterans and on this independence day, a local group wants to make sure they get the help they need.

At 1613 Greenway in Flint has been purchased for up to six homeless veterans to be housed.

The home needs some work, but the group Alternative Veteran Solutions says it's well worth the effort.

Executive Director Tredale Kennedy says, "We need donations. We need material. We need windows. A lot of labor has been volunteered to us, but without materials to get the job done, it's still a long ways off."

The group recently received a national award for its work helping homeless veterans receive healthcare, food, and clothing.
