FLINT -- A Flint couple has been charged for severely beating a 2-year-old boy.

It happened in the same weekend that a 2-year-old girl died in Flint Township, but is a completely unrelated case.

Neighbors called 9-1-1, asking for emergency crews to respond to the River Park Townhouses near Carpenter Road and Dort Highway in Flint on July 3rd after they heard what sounded like a child being beaten.

When police arrived, they found the child severely beaten, and rushed him to the hospital. At latest check, he was last listed in critical condition.

Wednesday, the boy’s father, 37-year-old Michael Levell Wilkerson of Flint has been charged with First Degree Child Abuse.

Wilkerson's girlfriend, 25-year-old Gwendolyn Lorraine Thomas also of Flint, was arrested Friday morning, and also faces First Degree Child Abuse charges in the case.

If found guilty, each faces 15 years in prison.

“It is a very sad and tragic set of circumstances for my office to be called upon to review two separate police reports in one day involving the assault of two young children, each two years of age, and each being the victim of their very own father,” said Prosecutor David Leyton wrote in a release.

Friends and family are taking donations to help pay for the little boy's medical expenses. Donations can be made at the River Park Townhouses Community Center.
