GENESEE COUNTY -- Richard Short, the convicted felon who obtained a $9.1 million tax credit from the State of Michigan, has been convicted of two felonies.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton  reports Short pleaded no Monday to “Attempt False Pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000.”  This stems from the incident last year, in which Short received the multimillion dollar credit from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in order to “create jobs” in the Flint area.

Prosecutor Leyton reports Short also pleaded no contest to the “Unlawful Use of a Financial Transaction Device for using the ATM card of his former neighbor,” who Leyton identifies as a now-deceased 87-year-old elderly woman who suffered from dementia.

The penalty from these two convictions will be served consecutively with his other criminal charges.

“Richard Short is a perpetual con man,” said Prosecutor David Leyton in a written release.  “His lying and deceitful ways were played out to the tune of $9.1 million dollars in tax credits from the State of Michigan and he swindled his elderly neighbor; the man has no shame. I feel this case was the best resolution for all concerned.  This was a complicated case involving voluminous financial records and a myriad of other documents.  The end result is that Richard Short is off the streets and we were able to obtain justice for his elderly neighbor who is now deceased.”

Short remains in custody at the Genesee County Jail and will be back in court for an August 30, 2011 sentencing date.
