BAY CITY -- Update: July 29th

Police now say that the child's mother lied about her infant being kidnapped and left in the yard.  They tell NBC25, they believe she kicked in the door to make it appear someone had ransacked the child's room in the kidnapping attempt. The case has now been handed over to the prosecutor to decide on criminal charges.

Police say when there is a missing child case, they use every resource and available officer to investigate. They say false reports such as this tie up valuable resources, and can put others in jeopardy.

A baby was found outside in the scorching heat early Thursday morning.

The family has only been living in their Bay City home about 6 months, and while they thought it was safe, their worst nightmare came true.  Thursday morning, Vince and Kayla got up around 1:00 a.m. to check on their 1 year old son, but were horrified when he wasn't in his bedroom.

After a frantic search, the parents found the child in their own backyard. Fortunately, despite temperatures in the 80 degree range, the child is expected to be alright.

Bay City Police believe someone tried to kidnap the baby, but they're not sure why the child was left in the couple's yard.  They are warning parents to keep a close eye on children, and to make sure that all windows and doors are locked.

Police are continuing to look through the evidence in this case.
