"Village Post Offices" integrated with local business could replace them

MID-MICHIGAN --
Another round of cuts could be coming for the US Postal Service. A list has been released of 3,600 locations nationwide that could be affected. In Mid-Michigan the list includes the Cumberland office in Saginaw, and the downtown location in Flint, on Saginaw street. The reason, continued lack of revenue. Spokesperson Ed Moore says revenue continues to fall very fast. "Over the past 5 years the postal service has had a 43 billion piece decline in mail volume," says Moore.
Moore stresses, however that there may not be much change. The delivery portions of these offices would remain functioning, leaving only the retail portion to close and potentially relocate as part of a nearby business. Is this privatization? Moore says no. "Not really privatization just working with local vendors," he says.
As far as layoffs? Moore says he can't absolutely say there won't be layoffs but they are looking mainly to "move and shift" the work force. You can see the list of Michigan offices slated for possible closing here. The changes are expected to happen by December.
