The City of Durand relies on one ambulance, and after today that ambulance could be gone. Mobile Medical Response, based in Saginaw, operates the service out of a city-owned building in Durand.
"We value our relationship with the community," says Jeff Robson, the paramedic on duty. He speaks highly of MMR too. "From the leadership on down to the road crews just a great organization to work for."
The problem? Without voter approval today the City of Durand may not have enough money to pay that company, due to lost revenue. MMR could not give us exact numbers of response times from other ambulance services but they did indicate that it would just stand to reason that the response times would be reduced if other areas were the primary responding service to calls in Durand.
At city hall voter turnout was extremely low, disappointing volunteers. Precinct 1 Chairperson Ann Collard said "I think people need to get more involved I think they need to get in to their papers and find what's going on and find out what's going on in this city. They need to go to city council meetings and find out what's going on. We need the young people to step up."
