FLINT -- In light of a massive budget deficit and overwhelming bills, the United States Postal Service is closing the Flint Processing and Distribution Center and moving operations to Pontiac.

USPS Detroit District Manager Chuck Howe says, “Given the drastic 20 percent decline in mail volume the Postal Service has experienced since 2007, we must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network. Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation.”

Howe says the impacted employees will be reassigned to the Michigan Metroplex plant or other open positions.  Of the over 225 employees there about 150 will be reassigned.  Around 50 employees will remain behind at the facility.

He says the public won’t notice any changes in their delivery. “Letters mailed to local addresses will be delivered the next day, the same as before. I am confident the transition will be smooth and transparent to our customers and they will continue to receive the same excellent service they always have,” Howe says.

The transition should be done by January 2012.
