FLINT -- Witnesses say a 17-year-old International Academy of Flint student was shot while riding an MTA bus on his way to school Wednesday.

People at the scene say the moving MTA bus was fired upon around 7:15 a.m. on Saginaw Street near Pasadena Avenue.  Adrianna Collins was on the bus when the unthinkable occurred. "I heard a loud bang," she described.  Collins says her friend and fellow student was shot in the chest as he was sitting in the bus heading to school. Collins said she saw the blood and her friend fell to his knees.

Williams was conscious and talking, but he was taken by an ambulance to Hurley Medical Center in Flint. He was last listed in critical condition.  Later Wednesday night his condition was upgraded, and he is expected to be OK.

Police were investigating the scene, that happened not far from where law enforcement were already securing the area for the arrival of Vice President Joe Biden.  Police were not able to verify any of these witnesses’ details at this point.

No suspect information has been released yet.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Flint Police at 810-237-6800.

NBC25 spoke with MTA General Manager Edward Benning Wednesday and he said this is the first time anything like this has happened in the over 30 years he has been with the company.

Benning says drivers are trained to look for suspicious activity but also reminds parents who use the MTA system to send their children to school that they are general transportation busses and not school busses.
