Residents gather to bid farewell to building
BURTON -- Burton's historic Fire Station No. 2 was leveled shortly after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, as a crowd of local residents gathered to say goodbye.
"Number one we're gaining cost savings because the old building was to the point it was costing a great deal to maintain. Lots of money in the roof and repairs and the stability of the station was not good. But with the new building we've gone 'green', so hopefully we will gain some prosperity in that aspect," said Burton Fire Chief Doug Halstead.
A new fire station will be built on the same site, and room will be left for a possible expansion of the building in the future.
"It was Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, they had shows on the south wall, open air shows, skating rinks in the back where they opened up the back doors for people top have hot chocolate and get warm," recalls Deputy Fire Chief Kenneth Gould.
