FENTON -- The statue of St. John the Evangelist lies in a garage at the catholic parish in Fenton. It was stolen sometime between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
"I thought it was a joke when a parishioner called me and told the St. John statue was missing bu then I went and looked and low and behold it was gone," said business manager Tony Dalecki at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish.
Tony said the thieves removed three of the four bolts that hold the nearly 7-foot statue in place and the fourth was actually broken off.
Shortyl after the statue was reported stolen, Fenton police found it at nearby Bush Park near the Shiawassee River.
"It just breaks your heart. It's a good catholic church. We serve the community so much and give so much to our community and for somebody to take that focal point of our church...it just really hurts, said longtime parishioner Karen Dudek.
Tony says police believe kids that were up to no good stole the statue.
"It's a litte eery. Fenton is really safe. We really haven't had any really problems around here," said Tony.
There was very little damage done to the statue and it is expected to be back in it's place by the end of the weekend.
