Sheriff's Department gets $400,000 extra

SAGINAW CO. -- Three additional deputies will soon be added to the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department, thanks to a $400,000 millage surplus.

"We're going to be looking at the east side of the county as well as the southwest side of the county and maybe seeing an additional deputy in Blumfield, Taymouth, or as far as St. Charles substations, to provide a better service coverage to our citizens," said Saginaw Co. Sheriff William Federspiel.

The Sheriff's Department millage was approved last May, and was supposed to raise $4.4 million. Instead, the millage brought in $4.8 million.

Sheriff Federspiel will hire two road patrol deputies, as well as an extra corrections officer.

The rest of the surplus will go into a 'rainy day fund.'

The Saginaw County Sheriff's Department currently provides law enforcement services for 20 of the county's 27 townships.
