Skiiers and snowboarders having to wait for next storm
FREELAND -- We didn't get the white Christmas so many folks were hoping for.
The lack of snow is putting a damper on some area ski businesses as well. Mt. Holly ski resort is the exception in Mid-Michigan. Over the last few weeks they've been making they're own snow for skiers. Despite the warmer temperatures this year, they've been able to accommodate customers.
But just north at Apple Mountain resort ski instructors are packing up headed home for the day without serving a single
Freeland's Apple Mountain hasn't opened at all this season. Its a far cry from last year.
Manager Shanda Mentus say, " By this time last year we were skiing and riding everybody and were 60% open. This year we have not opened yet."
Managers at Apple Mountain say the warmer temperatures have not only prevented natural snow, but also put a damper in the making of snow. You'll find all the snow guns here turned off for now. Its too expensive to make enough snow to cover the slopes especially when it melts so quickly.
Mentus continues saying, " Lack of cold temperatures we've been able to make some snow at times but the temperatures been mid to upper 20's with high humidity so really we don't make much snow."
Its bad news for the 100 employees that work at the resort. For now prospective skiers will have to visit the larger Mt. Holly. In this economy they're the only local resort able to afford making the white stuff.
