LANSING -- State Senator Tom Casperson has joined the nationwide fight to restore eligibility for Eric Dompierre, the Ishpeming basketball player who has Down Syndrome.

Senator Casperson sent a letter to the Michigan High School Athletic Association urging them to waive its age-eligibility requirement for students with disabilities.  He also introduced a resolution in the Senate calling on the MHSAA to waive the requirement in certain cases.

Dompierre was held back in school when he was younger.  He will be 19 next season, making him too old to compete during his senior year.

The resolution now goes to the Senate Education Committee for consideration.   More than 80,000 people have signed an online petition urging the MHSAA to waive the age requirement.
