The Special Olympics provides year-round training and competitions to millions of athletes around the world. They are able to provide the summer games through fundraisers and grants.
From 2-4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, family and friends showed their support for the ones they love, the Area 13 Special Olympics athletes.
"Today is supposed to be about having fun," said Director Pat Peters.
More than 100 people filled the Grand Blanc Lanes in Flint, laced their shoes, picked the right ball and started bowling.
Peters told NBC25 that they hope to raise $2,000 at the annual bowling fundraiser, but next year it will be bigger and better. All of the proceeds will go directly to the Area 13 team, that helps out Genesee and Lapeer Counties. A group that Joy Eddy said she is proud her 16-year-old daughter is a part of.
"It means so much because it's such a good cause. It's all for the kids," responded Joy Eddy.
A similar idea mimicked by Peters.
"Sports teaches people life. It's. . . how to work as a team. How to cooperate with each other. It's life skills," Peters said.
More than 19,000 athletes participate in Michigan Special Olympics programs.
