MT. MORRIS -- Dozens of friends, colleagues and family members crowded Hamady Middle/High school  Monday in remembrance of Joyce Nelson, the behavior coordinator who was shot and killed outside her home Thursday.

They described Nelson as a loving person known for her bright personality who really cared about her students and colleagues.

They said Monday night’s vigil was just as much about stopping domestic violence as it was about remembering their dear friend.

"I guess this is a message to anyone, not just women, but to men and everyone around Flint and America, that if you're in a situation that's not healthy for you, whether it be mentally, physically, you need to get out,” said Kenyada Dent, who worked with Nelson at Hamady.

Nelson’s boyfriend, 56-year-old Cleophis Hall, is charged with open murder in Nelson's death, as well as felony firearm and felon in possession of a firearm.
