LONDON -- Day 10 of the games proved to be thrilling for Team USA as women's soccer and men's basketball each moved one step closer to the gold medal.

Meanwhile, after 179 of 302 events in the books, China has retaken a slight edge in the overall medal count.  China currently stands with 64 medals after 10 days of games with the United States one back with 63 medals.  China has a little more breathing room at the top of the podium, with 31 gold medals to the USA's 29.

Lots more action planned for Tuesday as well.

For Team USA, the highlight will be women's hoops competing in a quarterfinal game against Canada at 9 a.m. and women's volleyball also taking the quarter in a quarterifnal against the Dominican Republic at 2 p.m.

Beach volleyball also sees two pairs of U.S. women taking the sand in the semifinals.  If they both advance, it would be an all-American final in women's beach volleyball.  Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings are the favorites and two-time defending Olympic champs.

Read below for updates on some of the top performances from Monday in London:

WOMEN'S SOCCER:  In perhaps the most thrilling outcome of the day, Alex Morgan pushed Team USA through to the gold medal game with a game-winning header in the 122nd minute in a 4-3 victory over Canada.  Megan Rapino scored two goals and Abby Wambach added one for Team USA.  Christine Sinclair had all three goals for Canada in a losing effort.  The Americans move into the gold medal game and will face Japan on Thursday at Wembley Stadium.  Japan defeated Team USA in the World Cup Final last summer.

MEN'S BASKETBALL:  Kevin Durant scored 17 of his 28 points in an explosive 42-point third quarter for Team USA as they blitzed past Argentina 126-97 on Monday night to stay undefeated in group stage.  Durant and the rest of Team USA will now move into the knockout round as the top seed and will play Australia in a quarterfinal game on Wednesday.  Lebron James added 18 points and Chris Paul had 17 for Team USA.  Manu Ginobli led Argentina with 16 points.

TRACK & FIELD:  In a surprise finish, USA's Jennifer Suhr won Olympic gold in the pole vault and beat Cuba's Yarisley Silva in a tiebreaker.  Both Suhr and Silva jumped the same height of 15 feet, 7 inches but Suhr won the gold because she recorded one fewer miss during the competition.  Defening two-time Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia settled for bronze with a vault of 15-5.  Also in track & field, Grand Blanc native Geena Gall continues to prepare for her 800m event.  The opening round of the women's 800m race will take place on Wednesday, August 8 at 6:35 a.m. eastern.

We will be quite busy on Tuesday with coverage of the USS Edson and the Michigan primary, so bare with us in terms of Olympic coverage. Check back later in the week for another Olympic blog post.
