CORUNNA -- 2010 graduate of Corunna High School, Shane Cantu died in Afghanistan Tuesday when an IED, or improvised explosive device, was thrown over a compound wall. Cantu left a lasting impression at Corunna High School, home of the Cavaliers.

School faculty members say PFC Shane Cantu was an outstanding student on and off the field. Someone that other students could look up to but was always willing to follow the lead of a fellow classmate. These attributes helped Cantu choose a military lifestyle after giving college a try for a year. After graduating infantry school at Fort Benning Georgia he went onto airborne school and was serving his first deployment overseas. Leo Constine taught Cantu before becoming Corunna High School’s principle.

“Him choosing to go into the military was kind of a natural option for him because he always wanted to be a part of a team willing to help leadership and wanted to always have a purpose in his life. In school he was  leader many students looked up to, staff respected and was well respected in the community. His loss is devastating to our community,” said Constine.

Corunna High School is holding a candlelight vigil at 8 o’clock Friday evening. Anyone can attend the event and honor a young man who gave everything for this nation.
