The driver who plowed into a group of elementary school children in Los Angeles on Wednesday was found to be nearly 101 years old.

Police say Preston Carter, who turns 101 next week, jumped a curb and crashed into the students just after school let out.

Carter says he was backing out of a parking lot and lost control of his car.

"One thing I wanted to say is this that I have sympathy and love for each family," said Carter.   "It was not on no purpose cause I love everybody."

At least 11 people were injured, including two adults.  One child is in critical condition.

Police say drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident.

Carter has a valid driver's license.

"After the age of 70 I know that senior citizens have to go to DMV on a regular basis to get tested," said C.O. George Rodriguez of the LAPD.  "They get not only their vision checked, but they also check their skills to make sure that they're capable of driving. Obviously in this case that will be one of the things that we'll be taking a look at. We'll be doing an assessment to see his suitability for continued driving."

We're asking facebook fans this morning if there should be increased regulations in place for older drivers?

Should older drivers face more stringent driving laws? Chime in now!
