Instead of taking your favorite teacher an apple, you may want to recognize them by sending him or her a link to a PBS awards contest.

It's the third annual Teacher Innovator Awards, which recognize pre-kindergarten through 12th grade educators who find ways to educate without the traditional textbook.

30 educators will receive prizes with the top 10 receiving a professional development prize package for a weeklong, all-expense-paid "innovation immersion experience" at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

Teachers can apply for the awards by submitting a video up to three minutes or a written essay of up to three pages with images.

The deadline to apply for the awards is Dec. 12.
