MT. MORRIS -- A nine-year-old boy is in "extremely critical condition" after being hit by a car early Wednesday morning.
The incident took place outside a home on Cypress Drive near Coldwater Road at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Mt. Morris Police Chief Scott McKenna confirms that the boy tried to break up a domestic dispute between his sister and her boyfriend.
"During this argument the 9-year-old younger brother of the female tried to intervene in the middle of the violence" says Chief McKenna.
In an attempt to stop the boyfriend from driving away, the victim was pinned up against the car.
Police believe the boy was dragged between 20-30 feet as the boyfriend fled the scene. Police apprehended the suspect a short time later at a home in Flint.
A neighbor, Kimberly Patton, was one of the first to respond and find the boy lying in the street. Her son was in the same class as the victim.
"When you're sitting looking at this 9-year-old boy laying there, you're thinking this could have been my kid. It was scary," says Patton.
The victim was taken to Hurley Medical Center. The most recent reports show the boy is listed in "extremely critical condition."
Police are interviewing the suspect and the investigation is ongoing.
