SAGINAW -- Arson is a problem facing many local communities especially over the halloween season but a yearly volunteer-driven event is detering arson in Saginaw.

City officials report just one arson over last year's two-day Halloween period which they say is historically unheard of in Saginaw.

They credit the work of volunteers through the city's Arson Watch event.

Construction companies, volunteers and other local businesses boarded up nearly 100 abandoned homes Friday.

Assistant city manager, Phil Ludos says thanks to the community's help, this time of year is much safer compared to years past.

"Arsons damage abandoned property but property around it. Really trying to make the Halloween period safer for everybody," says Ludos.
