MOUNT PLEASANT -- A 25-year-old ex-convict is jailed on a $1 million bond after being arraigned in the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man at an apartment building in Mount Pleasant.

Curtis R. Leachman is charged with an open count of murder and with witness tampering. Authorities say he threatened people who saw Saturday's killing of Tyrone Stanley outside the victim's apartment in the central Michigan city.

Leachman yawned during Monday's arraignment and told a judge the amount of his bond doesn't matter because he doesn't have any money.

The defendant also says he "never threatened any witness."

The judge has ordered he receive a court-appointed lawyer.

The Morning Sun says Leachman has convictions for burglary, home invasion and domestic violence.
