SAGINAW -- A new solar project was launched Thursday in Saginaw with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Consumers Energy has picked the city to be a part of its experimental advanced renewable program.

The utility company  will buy energy generated by Saginaw's 96 panels for up to 15 years.

"I think it also is a sign that the city is committed to new technology and new sources of energy that i think are going to be and already are an important part of the economy," Sagianw Mayor Greg Branch said.

The solar products used in the array are all produced by local companies.
