FLINT -- There's a new man behind the bench at Powers Catholic; his name is Jeremy Trent.
Trent has big shoes to fill following Tim Herman, who coached the Chargers for six seasons and led Powers to a state title in 2009. But, Trent said, the good news is, he doesn't back down from a challenge.
So far, so good.
Trent coached his first game as the Powers head coach last Friday, a 50-42 win over Flint Northwestern.
Trent stepped down at his alma mater, Swartz Creek, last season, then briefly took over at Lake Fenton.
But, when the Powers opportunity became available this summer, Trent said it was the right professional decision for himself and his family and he had to take it.
He knows it will be an uphill battle in his first year: Only two players returned from last year, which means several underclassman will get significant playing time.
The Chargers say they like their new coach's energy and are getting used to the new system.
"He's an amazing coach," Senior Eric Thompson said. "He knows his game very well. He works very hard and has our backs."
"He's high energy, he always gets us going, he's focused everyday and he's a great coach," Senior Nick Sullivan said.
"I love this school already, I love the kids and I love the families," Trent said. "I look forward to a great year. I think we will win more games than people expect. I'm really excited."
