GRAND BLANC -- Doors remained locked at Grand Blanc High School after rumors circulated on the internet that some students planned to bring guns to school on Friday, Dec. 21, in conjunction with the end of the Mayan calendar.

“The idea in the threat is that some of these kids want to go out in a blaze of glory,” Superintendent Dr. Norm Abdella said.

Schools in the district were put in secure mode for the rest of the week.  But late Wednesday morning, police were dispatched to the East building for reports of shots fired and that students were hiding in closets.  A mother said she received a text from her son and called 9-1-1.

The campus went on lockdown until police learned it was a hoax.  Authorities responded to a similar hoax on the West campus.

Two sophomore boys were removed from school.  The district plans to take disciplinary action while Grand Blanc police officials meet with the Genesee County prosecutor about possible charges.

"It was kind of nuts the couple of hours of school,” Grand Blanc High School student Austen Cline said.  His grandmother is considering keeping him and his sister home for the rest of the week.

Gail Boillat said, “I have all faith in the school but I hope that they just let the kids have Thursday and Friday off just to be safe."

Dr. Abdella assured the district is working closely with law enforcement.

“There may have been a time when something like that would have been ignored but coming right off of Connecticut, as I said, people are just very nervous and they're scared."

Nearby schools including Holy Family Catholic School are also on alert, keeping doors locked.

“You can't overreact but yet you need to be very, very vigilant,” said Holy Family Principal Michele Jahn.

Grand Blanc police continue to investigate the text hoax and alleged threats.
